Factory Man

Author: Beth Macy
Genre: Biography; Social Critique
Rating: ★★★★★
Beth Macy’s Factory Man tells the remarkable true story of John Bassett III and the once-thriving American furniture industry rooted in Bassett, Virginia. Through a mix of investigative reporting and personal narrative, Macy traces how generations of furniture makers built a regional economy that supported entire communities across Southwest Virginia. As global competition and overseas manufacturing began to dismantle that industry, Bassett fought to preserve American production and the livelihoods tied to it, turning the story into both a business saga and a portrait of a region under pressure.
For me, this book felt deeply personal. Having been born and raised in Bassett, Virginia, I lived through the rise and painful decline of the furniture industry that shaped the entire community. Macy’s documentation of Southwest Virginia is marvelous and respectful, capturing the pride, the struggle, and the resilience of the people who built their lives around those factories. I’m grateful she chose to tell this story and highlight a place that so often feels forgotten.
